The Feldenkrais Method

What is the Feldenkrais Method?

The Feldenkrais Method is a powerful form of somatic education that uses gentle, mindful movement to improve how you function in daily life. Named after its founder, Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), a physicist, engineer, and martial arts expert, this method draws on principles of physics, biomechanics, neuroscience, and human development.

At its core, the Feldenkrais Method is an educative approach for self-directed neuroplasticity. It leverages your brain’s remarkable ability to rewire itself throughout life, helping you discover and release habitual patterns that cause pain, limitation, and stress.

How Does It Work?

Rather than imposing corrections or prescribing exercises, the Feldenkrais Method invites you to explore movement with curiosity and attention. Through this process of discovery, your nervous system finds more efficient, comfortable, and elegant ways of organising itself.

The method works through two complementary approaches:

Awareness Through Movement (ATM)

These are verbally guided group lessons where you explore sequences of gentle movements. Lying on a mat, sitting, or standing, you are guided through carefully structured movement explorations that reveal your habitual patterns and open up new possibilities. Each lesson is a journey of self-discovery, deeply relaxing and restorative.

Functional Integration (FI)

These are one-on-one, hands-on sessions tailored to your individual needs. Through gentle, non-invasive touch, the practitioner communicates directly with your nervous system, helping you sense new possibilities for movement and posture. Sessions are performed fully clothed on a low, comfortable table.

The Science Behind the Method

Modern neuroscience has confirmed what Feldenkrais intuited decades ago: our brains remain plastic and changeable throughout our lives. Every movement lesson creates new neural pathways, strengthening connections that support easier, more efficient movement and weakening those associated with effort, strain, and pain.

Research has shown the Feldenkrais Method to be effective for chronic pain, balance improvement, mobility enhancement, and neurological rehabilitation.

What Makes It Different?

Unlike conventional exercise or therapy, the Feldenkrais Method does not aim to strengthen, stretch, or fix. Instead, it works by refining the quality of your movement through increased awareness. The result is not just physical improvement, but a deeper understanding of yourself and how you interact with the world.

As Moshe Feldenkrais himself said: “We make the impossible possible, the possible easy, and the easy elegant.”
